Bluewater Bay

Bluewater Bay sits on the northern shore of Algoa Bay, beyond the Swartkops River, with Amsterdamhoek along the river nearby. It is a relaxed beach suburb of family homes, many with views over the bay, and a strong community feel. The beach is part of everyday life here, and so is the wind.

Sand

River-side humidity

Homes near the Swartkops River in Amsterdamhoek experience damp air, which encourages mould in closed appliances and corrosion on connections.

• Choose a unit with a coated condenser coil.
• Place the outdoor unit on the side of the house sheltered from onshore wind.
• Use stainless or galvanised brackets and fixings.
• Raise ground-mounted units above drifting sand.
• Service every six months and rinse the outdoor coil with fresh water between services.

Washing machines

Sand is the main cause of washing machine faults near the beach. Shake out towels and clothes before washing, rinse sandy items first, clean the pump filter every few weeks in summer and never wash wetsuits in the machine.

Fridges and freezers

Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year, keep garage and braai-area fridges ventilated and out of the direct wind, and use delayed-restart surge protection.

If you notice a burning smell near the controls or a plate that works on and off, have the connections checked. Corrosion from salty air is a common cause near the beach.

Coffee machines

Keep coffee machines away from open doors facing the sea, and keep sand off the counter around them, as it can get into tank seats and trays.

Bluewater Bay has both permanent family homes and some holiday homes. For holiday homes, the usual advice applies: switch off and protect appliances before leaving, leave washing machine and dishwasher doors open, and check everything a few days before you return.
