A seasonal maintenance calendar for Kariega homes

Kariega's seasons put different appliances under pressure at different times. Planning a little maintenance around them prevents most emergency callouts.

Spring (September to November)

Book your aircon service before the heat arrives. Clean the indoor filters, clear the area around the outdoor unit and check that it cools properly on the first warm day. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the condenser coil, because it is about to work much harder.

Summer (December to March)

Clean aircon filters every month. Keep the outdoor unit shaded if it faces west, but never box it in. Check that chest freezers in garages have space around them and are not in direct sun. Watch for fridges that run nonstop, which is often an early warning of a fault.

Autumn (April to May)

If your aircon also heats, test heating mode before the first cold night. Run a hot maintenance wash in the washing machine and a cleaning cycle in the dishwasher to clear the build-up from a busy summer.

Winter (June to August)

Ovens and stoves work hardest in winter. Have a stove that trips, smells of burning or has a plate stuck on high checked before it fails completely. Check washing machine hoses and replace any that are cracked or bulging.

All year

Use surge protection, clean the dishwasher filter weekly, clean the washing machine pump filter every month or two, and descale the coffee machine when it asks.
