Kariega summers need real cooling

Kariega sits inland from Algoa Bay, out of reach of most of the sea breeze that cools Gqeberha's coastal suburbs. On summer afternoons the town can be several degrees hotter than the beachfront, and heat builds up in houses, offices and factory buildings through the day. On those days a fan just moves hot air around.

That is why aircon installations here are mostly about capacity. A unit that would comfortably cool a bedroom in Summerstrand may struggle in a west-facing bedroom in Kariega. Getting the size right is the single most important decision, and it is the first thing we look at when we quote.

Most of our residential installations in Kariega are bedrooms and open-plan living areas. When sizing we take into account:

• Orientation. West-facing rooms take the brunt of the afternoon sun and usually need a size up.
• Roof and ceiling. Rooms under poorly insulated roofs heat up fast. Adding ceiling insulation, if you do not have it, makes any aircon work better.
• Windows and doors. Large glass sliding doors to a patio bring in a lot of heat.
• How the room is used. A home office with computers, or a lounge where the family gathers, has more heat than an empty spare room.

As a guide, Kariega bedrooms often suit 12,000 BTU units and living areas 18,000 to 24,000 BTU, but we confirm after seeing the space.

Dust and fumes

Industrial areas can be dusty, and outdoor units near busy roads or yards collect dirt on their coils. A dirty coil cannot release heat properly, which pushes up running costs and puts strain on the compressor. We choose outdoor positions away from the worst dust where possible and recommend regular coil cleaning as part of servicing.

Electrical supply

Larger units or multiple units on one property may need a dedicated circuit from the distribution board. In commercial buildings, the existing supply and board capacity must be checked. Where new circuits are needed, the work should be done by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance. We let you know during the quote if this applies.

What you get on installation day

We confirm the positions with you, mount and level the indoor unit, core and seal the wall, run insulated copper pipes and the drain, and mount the outdoor unit securely. We pressure test the pipework, vacuum the system to remove air and moisture, release the refrigerant and test cooling and heating. Then we walk you through the remote and filter cleaning. Your quote is fixed and in writing, and every installation carries a 2-year warranty with a free service every six months for those two years.
