A South African household name
Defy has been part of South African homes for generations. Many families have grown up with a Defy stove in the kitchen and a Defy fridge or chest freezer in the house or garage. Today, Defy makes a wide range of fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, stoves, ovens and hobs, from affordable basics to modern inverter and built-in models.
Because Defy appliances are so common and so many are long-serving, they are some of the appliances we repair most. We are independent and not a Defy agent, but we know Defy appliances inside out.
Defy fridges and freezers
Defy fridges range from simple single-door and top-freezer models to frost-free fridge-freezers and side-by-sides. Defy chest freezers are a fixture in many garages. Common faults:
- Thermostat failures, leaving the fridge too warm or freezing everything
- Frost-free defrost faults, where ice blocks airflow and the fridge warms while the freezer stays cold
- Worn door and lid seals letting in warm air
- Starter relay and compressor starting faults, often after power cuts
- Fan motor failures in frost-free models

Defy washing machines
Defy front loaders and top loaders are widely used in family homes. Repairs we do often:
- Drain pumps and pump filters blocked by small items
- Door locks and lid switches
- Bearings and shock absorbers worn by heavy loads
- Drive belts on belt-driven models
- Heating elements and inlet valves
- Control board faults

Defy stoves and ovens
The Defy freestanding stove is one of the most familiar appliances in South Africa. We repair Defy freestanding stoves, slimline stoves, built-in ovens and hobs:
- Solid plate and radiant elements
- Simmerstats (a plate only working on high is a classic simmerstat fault)
- Oven bake, grill and fan elements
- Oven thermostats and selector switches
- Burned terminal blocks and tripping faults
- Door hinges and seals

Why Defy appliances are worth repairing
Many Defy appliances are simple, robust and use parts that are widely available and affordable. A Defy stove with a failed plate element or simmerstat, or a Defy fridge with a failed thermostat, can usually be repaired for a fraction of the cost of a new appliance and give years more service. We give you the price first and our honest view.
Tips for Defy owners
- Check fridge and freezer seals with the paper test.
- Use a delayed-restart surge protector on fridges and freezers.
- Do not overload washing machines.
- Switch stoves off at the isolator during power cuts.
- Have a stove that trips the earth leakage tested, rather than resetting it repeatedly.
