The Defy stove in Cape Town kitchens
The Defy freestanding stove is one of the most familiar appliances in Cape Town homes, from older family kitchens in Goodwood, Plumstead and Kenilworth to student flats in Rondebosch and cottages across the peninsula. Defy also makes slimline stoves, built-in ovens and ceramic hobs found in newer kitchens. Because they are so widely used, Defy parts are easy to get and most repairs are straightforward.
Defy stove and oven faults we fix
Plate not heating
A failed solid plate or radiant element, a faulty simmerstat or a burned connection behind the stove.
Plate only works on high
The classic simmerstat fault. The control switch for that plate is stuck and cannot cycle the plate on and off. A quick, affordable repair.
Oven not heating
A burned-out bake or grill element, a faulty thermostat or selector switch, or, on electronic models, a clock that needs setting after a power cut.
Oven too hot or too cool
A drifting thermostat. Bread burns on the bottom or cakes take far longer than they should.
Stove tripping the earth leakage
Moisture in an element, a damaged element or a burned terminal block. In Cape Town's damp winters, elements in homes that have been closed up can absorb moisture and trip the power when first used. Switch off at the isolator and have it tested rather than resetting the trip repeatedly.
Burning smell or scorch marks
An overheating connection, often at the terminal block where the supply cable enters the stove. Switch off at the isolator and call us.
Door, hinge and seal problems
Worn hinges and seals let heat escape, making the oven slow and the front hot.
Safety on every job
Stoves are high-current appliances. Before working, we isolate the stove. During every repair we check the terminal block, internal wiring and the connections for heat damage. If the household isolator or supply cable shows problems, we recommend a registered electrician for that part. We work on electric stoves and ovens; gas appliances need a registered gas practitioner.
Cape Town winters
Winter means more baking, roasts and long cooking, so weak elements and drifting thermostats show up then. Damp also increases the risk of moisture in elements. If your Defy oven has started burning the bottom of bakes, taking much longer, or tripping on first use, have it checked before the cooking season.
Is a Defy stove worth repairing?
Almost always. Plate elements, simmerstats, oven elements, thermostats and switches are affordable and widely available. A repair is usually a fraction of the price of a new stove. If the oven cavity is badly rusted or several major parts have failed together, we will tell you honestly.
