The south-easter and salt air

The summer south-easter, the wind Capetonians call the Cape Doctor, blows hard across the peninsula for weeks at a time. Wet winters

Cape Town gets most of its rain in winter. Damp, cold months mean washing machines and tumble dryers work harder, mould grows in closed-up front loaders, and reverse-cycle aircons are used for heating. Moisture can also find its way into oven elements in homes that are closed up for long periods.

Hot, dry inland summers
