Cape Town fridges, three different climates

Coastal homes

In Sea Point, Green Point, Hout Bay, Blouberg, Muizenberg and Fish Hoek, salt air reaches the condenser coil at the back or bottom of the fridge. Combined with dust and fluff, it makes the fridge work harder and slowly corrodes the coil and fan motor. Fridges in garages and braai areas near the sea suffer most.

Hot inland suburbs

In Durbanville, Bellville, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Paarl and Stellenbosch, summer temperatures climb. Fridges in hot kitchens and chest freezers in garages run almost nonstop on hot days. Weak relays, tired fans and slightly undercharged systems tend to fail then.

Damp winters

Wet winters bring humidity indoors. Door seals that do not close properly let in moist air, which turns to ice on the back wall or in the freezer, and defrost systems have more to do.

Faults we fix most

• Not cooling: failed fans, thermostats or sensors, defrost failures, starter relays, gas leaks or compressor problems
• Freezer cold, fridge warm: almost always a defrost or fan fault in a frost-free fridge
• Ice build-up: defrost heater, timer or sensor faults, or worn door seals
• Water leaking: blocked defrost drains, or ice maker and dispenser water lines
• Clicking but not running: starter relay or overload, often after power cuts
• Running nonstop: dirty condenser, worn seals or low gas
• Ice maker and water dispenser faults: frozen fill tubes, blocked filters, faulty inlet valves

Side-by-side and built-in fridges

Many Cape Town homes, especially in the Southern Suburbs, Constantia, Durbanville estates and Century City apartments, have side-by-side, French-door or integrated fridges. We repair ice makers, water dispensers, inverter compressors and control boards, and remove and refit built-in fridges carefully to protect your cabinetry.

Protecting your fridge

• Use a surge protector with a delayed restart, so the compressor does not restart against high pressure when power returns.
• Vacuum the condenser coil twice a year, more often near the sea.
• Leave space around the fridge for airflow.
• Check door seals with the paper test: if a sheet of paper slides out easily when the door is closed on it, the seal needs replacing.
• Keep garage freezers out of direct sun.

Gas leaks and regassing

If a fridge has lost refrigerant, there is a leak. We find and repair it, replace the filter drier, vacuum the system and recharge with the correct gas. Topping up without fixing the leak is not a real repair.

Repair or replace?

Fans, thermostats, defrost parts, relays and seals are affordable and almost always worth fixing. Gas leaks and compressors cost more, but on a fridge under about eight to ten years old, especially a larger or premium model, repair is often still worthwhile. We give you the price and an honest view first.

Keep the doors closed, move essentials to a cooler box with ice and, if the fridge is clicking without running, switch it off to protect the compressor.
