Quick answer

A1 Refrigeration repairs out-of-warranty Smeg built-in ovens, freestanding cookers, ceramic and induction hobs and other Smeg appliances in Cape Town and the Western Cape, and Gqeberha and the Eastern Cape. We are independent and not a Smeg agent. Common oven repairs include elements, fan motors, thermostats, door seals and hinges, cooling fans and controls. Repairs carry a 6-month warranty.

Independent repairer: A1 Refrigeration is not an authorised Smeg agent and is not affiliated with Smeg. The Smeg name is used only to describe the appliances we repair.

Smeg: design-led Italian appliances

Smeg is an Italian brand known for design, from its retro-styled fridges and small appliances to its range of built-in ovens, freestanding cookers and hobs. In Cape Town and Gqeberha, Smeg ovens and cookers are popular in renovated kitchens, estate homes and holiday homes where style matters as much as performance.

We are an independent repair company and not a Smeg agent, but we repair Smeg cooking appliances regularly and take care with their finishes.

Smeg ovens and cookers

Smeg makes built-in single and double ovens, compact ovens and freestanding cookers with gas or electric hobs and electric ovens. The faults we fix most often on the electric side:

  • Oven not heating, from a failed bake, grill or circular fan element
  • Fan motor faults, causing uneven cooking on fan settings
  • Thermostat or temperature sensor drift, so the oven runs too hot or too cold
  • Cooling fan faults on built-in ovens, which let the controls and cabinetry overheat
  • Door seal wear and hinge problems, especially on heavy oven doors
  • Control knob, switch and clock faults
  • Tripping the earth leakage, often from moisture in an element

We work on electric ovens, cookers and hobs. Gas hobs and gas connections should be handled by a registered gas practitioner.

See our Smeg oven repair pages for Cape Town and Gqeberha.

Smeg hobs

We repair Smeg ceramic and induction hobs, including failed zones, switch and touch control faults and induction power board faults. Cracked glass must not be used; switch off at the isolator and have the top replaced.

Other Smeg appliances

We also repair Smeg fridges, dishwashers and washing machines. See our fridge repair, dishwasher repair and washing machine repair pages, or call with your model number.

Caring for a Smeg oven

  • Use the right cleaning products. Some Smeg ovens have special enamel or catalytic liners. Check the manual before using oven cleaners.
  • Do not line the oven floor with foil. It traps heat and can damage the enamel and the bottom element.
  • Keep built-in oven vents clear, so the cooling fan can protect the cabinetry.
  • Treat the door gently. Heavy doors put strain on hinges if slammed or leaned on.
  • Switch off at the isolator during power cuts.

Is a Smeg oven worth repairing?

Almost always. Smeg ovens and cookers are premium appliances, and elements, fans, thermostats, seals and hinges are affordable compared to replacing a range cooker or a built-in oven that must fit an existing cabinet. We give you the price first.

Testing your Smeg oven's temperature

If bakes are burning or taking much longer than the recipe says, you can check your oven's accuracy before calling us:

1. Place an oven thermometer in the centre of the middle shelf. 2. Set the oven to 180 degrees on the conventional (top and bottom heat) setting. 3. Wait 20 to 30 minutes after it reaches temperature. 4. Read the thermometer through the glass without opening the door, and note the reading over another ten minutes.

A difference of up to about 10 degrees is normal. A larger difference points to a thermostat or sensor fault. If the oven heats properly on conventional settings but not on fan settings, the circular fan element or fan motor is the likely cause. If it does not heat at all on one setting, the element for that setting has probably failed. Let us know what you find when you book; it helps us bring the right part.

Independent repairs and your warranty

If your Smeg appliance is still under Smeg's warranty, contact Smeg or your retailer first. After the manufacturer's warranty ends, our repairs carry our own 6-month warranty.

Booking

Call or WhatsApp 067 212 0062, or use the booking form. A photo of the model plate (usually on the oven door frame) helps us bring the right part.

Frequently asked questions

My Smeg oven cooks unevenly on the fan setting. What is wrong?

Often a failed circular fan element or fan motor. Both are repairable.

Do you repair Smeg gas cookers?

We repair the electric ovens and electrical parts. Gas hobs and gas connections need a registered gas practitioner.

Are you a Smeg agent?

No. We are an independent repair company.

Can you repair a Smeg oven door that will not close properly?

Yes. Worn or bent hinges and damaged door seals are common on heavy oven doors, and both can be replaced.

Do your repairs carry a warranty?

Yes. Every repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts we fit and our workmanship. We have more than 15+ years of experience and quote before any work starts.

Do you charge a callout fee?

Our callout fee is R400. It covers the visit and the diagnosis, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair or installation, so you only pay it if you decide not to proceed.

Are you an authorised Smeg agent?

No. A1 Refrigeration is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with or authorised by Smeg. If your Smeg appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact Smeg or your retailer first.
