Midea aircons
Midea is one of the world's largest manufacturers of air conditioners, and its split and inverter units are widely installed in South African homes, flats and offices. They are popular for their value and efficiency, and many installers fit them as a standard option.
We are an independent repair company and not a Midea agent. We service and repair Midea aircons regularly, along with Midea fridges and other appliances.
Common Midea aircon faults
Not cooling or heating properly
The most common causes are dirty filters and coils, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor or an outdoor fan fault. Clean the filters first; if it still struggles, it needs a diagnosis.
Error codes
Midea units show error codes on the indoor display when they detect a problem. Codes differ between models, but they often point to:
- Communication faults between the indoor and outdoor units
- Temperature sensor faults
- Outdoor unit protection, such as high pressure or overheating
- Fan motor faults
- Control board faults
Take a photo of the code and the model stickers on both units, and send them to us. That helps us diagnose quickly and bring the right parts.
Outdoor unit not starting
The indoor fan blows, but the outdoor unit hums or stays silent. Often a capacitor, contactor, board or communication fault.
Water leaking indoors
A blocked drain line or tray, a poorly sloped drain or a frozen coil.
Noise
Loose panels, worn fan motors or debris in the outdoor unit.
Corrosion
Near the coast, salt corrodes outdoor coils, joints and brackets, eventually causing gas leaks.

Servicing a Midea aircon
Regular servicing keeps Midea units efficient and catches problems early. A service covers cleaning filters, coils and the blower, flushing the drain, checking refrigerant pressures, testing capacitors and electrical connections and checking for corrosion. We recommend:
- Once a year for normal home use
- Every six months for units near the sea or running all day in offices
If we install your new aircon, you get a 2-year warranty and a free service every six months for those two years.
Repair or replace?
Most Midea faults, such as capacitors, sensors, fans, drains and repairable leaks, are well worth fixing. If an older fixed-speed unit has a failed compressor or badly corroded coils, a new inverter unit may make more sense. We will tell you honestly.
Other Midea appliances
We also repair Midea fridges, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers. Call us with your model number.
Choosing where to install a Midea unit
Many Midea faults we repair are made worse by where the unit was installed. If you are adding a new aircon, or moving an existing one, a few placement choices make a big difference to how long it lasts:
- Outdoor unit: on a sheltered wall, out of direct sea wind and spray, with at least 30 cm behind it and a metre of open space in front of the fan.
- Shade: some shade from the afternoon sun helps, but never box the unit in.
- Height: high enough to stay clear of drifting sand, garden debris and pets, but reachable for servicing.
- Drain: a continuous downward fall to a garden bed or drain, not onto a wall or walkway.
- Indoor unit: level, away from direct sun on the unit itself, and where the airflow is not blocked by curtains or furniture.
- Electrical: a suitable circuit and isolator; larger or multiple units may need a dedicated circuit installed by a registered electrician.
Good placement reduces corrosion, keeps efficiency high and makes servicing quicker and cheaper over the life of the unit.
Independent repairs and your warranty
If your Midea aircon is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact the manufacturer, your installer or your retailer first. After that, our repairs carry our own 6-month warranty.
