Whirlpool in South African homes
Whirlpool is a long-established international brand, and its washing machines, especially large-capacity top loaders and front loaders with features like 6th Sense load sensing, are found in many South African family homes. Whirlpool also makes fridges, dishwashers, ovens and microwaves, which we repair as well.
We are an independent repair company and not a Whirlpool agent. Our technicians have repaired Whirlpool appliances for many years.
Whirlpool top loaders
Large-capacity Whirlpool top loaders are popular with big families and on farms because they handle heavy loads and are simple to use. The faults we fix most often:
- Lid switch and lid lock faults, so the machine will not start or spin
- Drive belt wear or breakage, where the motor runs but the drum or agitator does not
- Drain pump blockages, often from socks, coins and small items
- Suspension and balance problems causing banging during the spin
- Inlet valve faults and slow filling
- Motor and control faults
Whirlpool front loaders
Whirlpool front loaders are efficient and gentle on clothes. Common repairs include:
- Drain pump and filter blockages
- Door lock faults
- Worn bearings and shock absorbers
- Heating element and temperature sensor faults
- Door seal tears and mould
- Control board faults, sometimes after surges
Whirlpool machines display fault codes that point to drainage, water supply, door, heating and motor problems. A photo of the code and the model sticker lets us bring the right part.

We also repair Whirlpool fridges, dishwashers and ovens. See our fridge repair, dishwasher repair and oven and stove repair pages, or call us with your model number.
Is a Whirlpool washing machine worth repairing?
Usually, yes. Belts, lid switches, door locks, pumps and inlet valves are affordable parts. Bearings and control boards cost more, but on a good machine they are often still worth replacing. We give you the price first and our honest recommendation.
Looking after a Whirlpool washing machine
- Do not overload. Even large-capacity machines have limits, and overloading wears bearings and suspension.
- Check pockets. Coins, hair clips and bra wires block pumps.
- Clean the pump filter on front loaders every month or two.
- Leave the door or lid open after washing to prevent mould and smells.
- Use the right detergent dose. Too much causes foam and residue.
- Use surge protection for the control board.
Top loader or front loader: what to expect from repairs
Whirlpool owners often ask which type of machine is easier to keep running. Both are repairable, but the typical repairs differ:
- Top loaders usually need simpler mechanical repairs: belts, lid switches, agitator parts, suspension rods and pumps. These are quick to diagnose and affordable. Top loaders are also more forgiving of heavy, bulky loads, which is why they are popular on farms and with big families.
- Front loaders use less water and detergent and are gentler on clothes. Their typical repairs are door locks, door seals, pumps, bearings and electronic controls. Bearings are the biggest job, so keeping to the load limit pays off.
Whichever type you own, three habits prevent most breakdowns: do not overload, check pockets for coins and small objects, and leave the door or lid open after washing so the machine can dry out. If your machine starts making a new noise, has trouble draining or shows an error, book a check early. Small faults caught early are always cheaper than major ones.

Frequently asked questions
My Whirlpool top loader fills but will not agitate. What is wrong?
Often a worn or broken drive belt, a lid switch fault or a motor coupling problem. We diagnose and repair it on site.
Do you repair Whirlpool front loaders as well as top loaders?
Yes, both, as well as other Whirlpool appliances.
Are you a Whirlpool agent?
No. We are an independent repair company.
How long does a Whirlpool washing machine repair usually take?
Most repairs, such as belts, lid switches, pumps and door locks, are done in under two hours on the first visit. Bearings take longer and some parts may need to be ordered.
Do your repairs carry a warranty?
Yes. Every repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts we fit and our workmanship. We have more than 15+ years of experience and quote before any work starts.
Do you charge a callout fee?
Our callout fee is R400. It covers the visit and the diagnosis, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair or installation, so you only pay it if you decide not to proceed.
Are you an authorised Whirlpool agent?
No. A1 Refrigeration is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with or authorised by Whirlpool. If your Whirlpool appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact Whirlpool or your retailer first.
