A familiar South African refrigeration brand
KIC is a long-standing name in South African refrigeration, known for practical, affordable fridges, fridge-freezers, upright freezers and especially chest freezers. In many homes, a KIC chest freezer in the garage or storeroom has been quietly keeping meat and bulk shopping frozen for years.
We are an independent repair company and not a KIC agent, but KIC fridges and freezers are among the appliances we repair most often.
Why KIC appliances are worth repairing
KIC fridges and freezers are generally simple in design: a compressor, a thermostat, a condenser, an evaporator and, on frost-free models, a fan and defrost system. Simple designs mean:
- Faults are usually easy to diagnose
- Parts such as thermostats, relays and seals are affordable
- Repairs are often completed in one visit
For a chest freezer full of food, a quick, affordable repair is far better than losing the contents and buying a new freezer.
Common KIC fridge and freezer faults
Freezer not freezing hard
A worn lid seal, a failing thermostat, low gas from a leak, or too much heat around the freezer. Chest freezers in hot garages work much harder in summer.
Running nonstop
A thermostat stuck on, a dirty condenser, a worn seal or low gas.
Clicking but not starting
The starter relay or overload is trying to start the compressor and failing. Switch off and call us, as repeated attempts can damage the compressor.
Heavy ice build-up
On manual-defrost freezers, ice builds up naturally and needs defrosting when it is thicker than about a centimetre. Very fast build-up points to a worn seal letting in moist air.
Fridge warm, freezer cold
On frost-free fridge-freezers, a defrost or fan fault.
Gas leaks
Sometimes caused by corrosion, sometimes by using a knife or screwdriver to chip ice. Always let ice melt naturally.

Looking after a KIC chest freezer
- Keep it out of direct sun and leave space around it for heat to escape.
- Vacuum dust and cobwebs from the condenser area and vents.
- Check the lid seal by closing it on a sheet of paper; if the paper slides out easily, the seal needs replacing.
- Defrost when ice is more than about a centimetre thick, without sharp tools.
- Use a delayed-restart surge protector, especially where power cuts are common.
- Keep it reasonably full; a full freezer holds its temperature better.
If your freezer stops
Keep the lid closed. A full chest freezer can keep food frozen for many hours if left shut. Check the plug, switch and breaker, and switch off if the compressor clicks repeatedly. Then call or WhatsApp us with a photo of the rating plate and tell us it is full of food so we can prioritise it.
Choosing where to keep a chest freezer
Where you put a KIC chest freezer has a big effect on how hard it works and how long it lasts:
- Coolest space available. An inside storeroom or a shaded garage is better than a sunny outbuilding or a carport.
- Space around it. Most chest freezers release heat through their outer walls or from a condenser at the back or bottom. Leave a gap around the freezer and do not stack boxes against it.
- Level and dry. Stand it on a level, dry floor, raised slightly if the area can get wet.
- Its own socket. Plug it into its own wall socket or a good surge protector, not a multi-plug shared with other appliances.
- Away from the coast's salt. In beachfront homes, keep freezers indoors rather than in open garages facing the sea.
A well-placed freezer runs shorter cycles, uses less electricity and has far fewer breakdowns.
Independent repairs and your warranty
If your KIC appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact the manufacturer or your retailer first. After that, our repairs carry our own 6-month warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing an old KIC chest freezer?
Usually, yes. Thermostats, relays and seals are affordable. Gas leaks on very old freezers may be less economical, and we will tell you honestly.
My KIC freezer clicks but will not run. What should I do?
Switch it off to protect the compressor and call us. It is often a starter relay fault.
Do you repair KIC fridges as well as freezers?
Yes, including fridge-freezers and upright freezers.
Do your repairs carry a warranty?
Yes. Every repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts we fit and our workmanship. We have more than 15+ years of experience and quote before any work starts.
Do you charge a callout fee?
Our callout fee is R400. It covers the visit and the diagnosis, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair or installation, so you only pay it if you decide not to proceed.
Are you an authorised KIC agent?
No. A1 Refrigeration is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with or authorised by KIC. If your KIC appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact KIC or your retailer first.
