One of the most common fridge faults we see in Cape Town is a fridge that has gone warm while the freezer stays frozen. It feels like the fridge has half-broken, and in a way it has. The cause is almost always one of a few parts, and most are very repairable.

Quick answer

In most frost-free fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge section. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, that airflow is blocked or stopped: usually by ice from a failed defrost system (heater, sensor, timer or board), a failed evaporator fan, a stuck air damper, or blocked vents. Repairs are usually affordable.

How a frost-free fridge moves cold air

In a frost-free fridge-freezer there is usually only one cooling coil, the evaporator, hidden behind a panel at the back of the freezer. A small fan blows air across that coil. Most of the cold air goes into the freezer; some is directed through a duct or damper into the fridge section. A thermostat or sensor controls how much.

Every few hours, a defrost heater melts the frost that builds up on the coil, and the water drains away. If any part of this system fails, the freezer often stays cold while the fridge warms up.

Cause 1: Defrost failure

If the defrost heater, defrost sensor, timer or control fails, frost keeps building up on the evaporator coil until it turns into a solid block of ice. Air can no longer pass through the coil properly, and the duct to the fridge section blocks first.

Signs:

  • A thick layer of frost or ice on the back panel inside the freezer
  • The fridge slowly warms over a few days
  • Sometimes water leaking inside the fridge when ice partially melts

What you can do: As a temporary fix, empty the fridge and freezer, switch off and leave the doors open with towels down for 24 hours to melt the ice. The fridge will often work again for a while, but the ice will return until the faulty part is replaced.

Cause 2: Evaporator fan failure

If the fan behind the freezer panel fails, cold air is not circulated. The freezer may still be fairly cold near the coil, but the fridge gets no cold air at all.

Signs: Open the freezer while the fridge is running. On many models you should hear the fan. If it is silent, or makes a scraping noise because ice is touching the blades, the fan is the likely problem.

Cause 3: Air damper stuck

Some fridges have a motorised or manual damper that controls air into the fridge section. If it sticks closed, or ice forms around it, the fridge warms up.

Cause 4: Blocked vents

Overpacking the freezer or fridge can block the air vents between the sections. Check that food is not pressed against the vents at the back of the freezer or at the top of the fridge.

Cause 5: Thermostat or sensor fault

If the fridge-section sensor fails, the control may not call for cold air to be sent to the fridge.

Cause 6: Door seal

A worn fridge door seal lets in warm, moist air. This adds frost to the evaporator and makes defrost problems more likely.

Test: Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points. If it slides out easily, the seal needs replacing.

What to check yourself

1. Is the temperature control set correctly? 2. Are vents blocked by food? 3. Is there heavy ice on the freezer back panel? 4. Can you hear the freezer fan running? 5. Do the door seals close properly?

Why it happens more in some homes

In Cape Town's damp winters, more moisture enters the fridge every time the door is opened, so the defrost system works harder. In hot inland suburbs like Durbanville and Bellville, fridges run longer in summer. Both put more strain on the defrost components.

Getting it fixed

Defrost heaters, sensors, fans and dampers are affordable parts. A technician tests each component to find the actual fault rather than guessing, and the repair usually takes one visit. Every repair we do carries a 6-month warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Will defrosting my fridge fix the problem?

Often temporarily. If the defrost system has failed, the ice will build up again within days or weeks until the faulty part is replaced.

Is it the compressor if the fridge is warm but the freezer is cold?

Usually not. If the freezer is cold, the compressor is working. The problem is getting the cold air into the fridge.

How long can food stay in a warm fridge?

Keep perishable food at fridge temperature. If the fridge is warm, move food to a cooler box with ice until it is repaired.
