Grotto Bay is a quiet coastal settlement within a private nature reserve on the West Coast, between Melkbosstrand and Yzerfontein, with fynbos, dunes, a rocky shoreline and long views over the Atlantic. Homes here are a mix of holiday houses and permanent residences, built to blend into the natural setting.

The West Coast wind blows strongly, especially in summer, carrying salt spray and fine sand across the reserve. Everything outdoors is affected.

- Place outdoor units on the most sheltered side of the house, ideally behind a wall or structure that breaks the wind without boxing the unit in.
- Raise outdoor units above drifting sand.
- Service every six months and rinse the outdoor coil with fresh water between services.
- Check brackets after strong winds.
