Strand

Strand stretches along the northern shore of False Bay, with a long beach backed by a line of apartment blocks on Beach Road and established family suburbs behind it, up towards Somerset West. It is a popular holiday destination, especially in December, and home to families, retirees and many owners of holiday flats.

Beachfront apartments and the south-easter

The summer south-easter blows straight onto the Strand beachfront, carrying salt spray and fine sand. Apartment balconies facing the sea take the full force.

• Aircon outdoor units on balconies corrode quickly and collect sand. Service them every six months, rinse coils with fresh water between services, and choose coated coils and stainless fixings for new units.
• Fridge condensers clog with salt and sand blown through open doors.
• Stove connections in sea-facing kitchens corrode over time.
• Ceramic hobs get scratched by sand on the bottom of pots.

Leaks in apartment blocks

In a block of flats, a burst washing machine hose or a leaking dishwasher affects the unit below. Many Strand flats are holiday units that stand empty for long periods, so a leak can go unnoticed. Close the taps to washing machines and dishwashers when you leave, replace old rubber hoses with braided ones and check them before each season.

Holiday rentals

Strand runs straight into Gordon''s Bay, and we cover both on the same Helderberg runs. The beachfront apartment towers take the full south-easter and salt spray, while inland suburbs such as Onverwacht and the newer developments towards the N2 are more sheltered but hotter in summer.
