What breaks aircons in Cape Town

Salt and the south-easter

Along the Atlantic Seaboard, Blouberg and False Bay coasts, the summer south-easter drives salt and sand into outdoor units. Salt corrodes the thin aluminium fins and copper joints, eventually causing gas leaks. Sand and dust clog the coil, so the unit runs hot and uses more electricity.

Heat in the northern suburbs and Winelands

In Durbanville, Bellville, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Stellenbosch and Paarl, summer afternoons get hot. Units work long hours under heavy load, and capacitors, fan motors and slightly undercharged systems fail on the hottest days.

Damp winters

Many Cape Town households use their aircons for heating in winter. Damp air and mould affect indoor coils and drains, and reverse-cycle units can have defrost or reversing valve problems that only show in heating mode.

Power surges

Before you call

• Check the remote is in cooling (or heating) mode and the batteries work.
• Check the isolator and breaker.
• Clean the indoor filters.
• Look at the outdoor unit: is the fan spinning, and is anything blocking it?

Repair or replace?

If your unit is under about ten years old and the fault is a capacitor, fan, sensor, drain or a repairable leak, repair is almost always worth it. An old fixed-speed unit with a failed compressor or badly corroded coil is often better replaced with a new inverter unit, which also costs less to run. We will tell you honestly.
