LG aircons in Cape Town
LG's split aircons, many with dual inverter compressors, are a common choice for Cape Town bedrooms, living areas and offices. They are quiet, efficient and, with regular servicing, long-lasting. We repair and service them across the city, the Helderberg and the Winelands.
LG aircon faults we fix
Weak cooling or heating
Start with the filters. If they are clean and the unit still struggles, common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty outdoor coil, a failed capacitor or fan, or a sensor problem.
Error codes
LG indoor units display codes or flash lights when they detect a fault. Codes vary by model but commonly relate to sensors, communication between indoor and outdoor units, outdoor unit protection and fan motors. Send us a photo of the code and model stickers.
Communication errors
If the indoor and outdoor units cannot "talk" to each other, the outdoor unit will not run. Causes include wiring faults, corroded connections, board faults and surge damage.
Water leaking indoors
A blocked drain line or tray, a drain without enough fall or a frozen coil from dirty filters or low gas.
Winter heating problems
Cape Town households rely on reverse-cycle aircons through wet winters. A unit that blows cold air in heating mode may have a reversing valve, sensor or defrost control fault. Short pauses with steam from the outdoor unit on cold mornings are normal defrost cycles.
Noise
Loose panels, worn fan motors, debris or ice.
Cape Town conditions
- Coastal salt: outdoor units in Sea Point, Hout Bay, Blouberg and on the False Bay coast corrode faster. Service every six months.
- The south-easter: wind drives sand and dust into outdoor coils; clean them annually at least.
- Hot inland summers: in Durbanville, Bellville and Paarl, units work long hours. Capacitors fail more often in heat.
- Power interruptions: inverter boards are sensitive to surges.
Servicing
A service includes cleaning filters, coils and the blower wheel, flushing the drain, checking refrigerant pressures, testing electrical connections and capacitors and checking brackets and corrosion. Once a year inland; every six months on the coast or for heavy use.
Repair or replace?
Most LG aircon faults, including capacitors, fans, sensors, drains, communication faults and repairable leaks, are well worth fixing. A failed compressor or badly corroded coil on an older unit may make a new inverter unit better value. We will tell you honestly.
