LG front loaders in Cape Town
LG front loaders and washer-dryers are found in homes and apartments across Cape Town. Most use LG's direct-drive motor, which sits directly on the back of the drum without a belt. It is quiet and durable, but it has its own typical faults, and diagnosing them properly takes experience.
LG error codes
LG machines show letter codes on the display. Common ones relate to:
- Drainage: the machine cannot pump the water out
- Water inlet: it cannot fill in the expected time
- Door: the lock cannot confirm the door is closed
- Unbalance: the load cannot be balanced for spinning
- Motor: the motor cannot turn the drum as expected
Check your manual for your model's codes, and send us a photo of the code and model sticker. That usually tells us which part to bring.
LG faults we fix
Direct-drive motor problems
If the drum will not turn, turns jerkily or the machine shows a motor code, the cause may be the rotor position sensor (sometimes called a hall sensor), the stator, the wiring or the motor control on the board. Sometimes a rotor has come loose. We test each part to find the actual fault.
Not draining
Blocked pump filter, kinked drain hose or failed pump.
Not filling
A closed tap, blocked inlet filter, faulty inlet valve or low pressure.
Door lock faults
The machine will not start or will not unlock.
Bearings and tub seals
On older or heavily used machines, a loud roar during the spin points to worn bearings. Because the motor is direct-drive, worn bearings can also damage the rotor and stator if left too long.
Mould and smells
Front loaders left closed in damp Cape Town winters grow mould in the door seal and drawer. LG's tub clean programme helps when used monthly.
Cape Town conditions
- Wet winters mean heavier loads and slower drying. Do not overload the drum.
- Soft water needs less detergent. Too much causes foam, which can lead to errors and skipped spins.
- Beach sand from coastal suburbs blocks pump filters in summer.
- Power interruptions can damage boards; use surge protection.
Looking after an LG washing machine
- Run the tub clean programme monthly.
- Clean the pump filter regularly.
- Leave the door and drawer open after washing.
- Use the right amount of detergent.
- Have new noises checked early.
Repair or replace?
Pumps, valves, door locks, rotor position sensors and seals are affordable. Bearings and stators cost more but are often worth replacing on a good machine. We give you the price first.
