Cape Town takes its coffee seriously. The city is full of independent roasters and coffee shops, and many homes have invested in a good bean-to-cup or espresso machine. Offices from the city centre to Century City, Bellville and Claremont run bean-to-cup machines all day. These machines make great coffee, but they need regular care.

Faults we fix most

Weak, watery or cold coffee

Usually scale, a blocked brew unit, a grinder set too coarse or worn, or a failing heater or thermoblock.

Leaks

Worn seals and O-rings, a cracked water tank, a full or badly seated drip tray, or internal hose and valve leaks.

Blocked milk systems

Dried milk blocks frothers, tubes and steam wands. In offices and holiday homes this happens quickly.

Grinder problems

Oily dark-roast beans clog the grinder, and the occasional small stone in a bag of beans can jam or damage the burrs.

Error lights and messages

Brew unit, water tank, grounds container, descale or temperature errors. Note the message or light pattern and send it to us.

Will not switch on

Power supply faults, a blown thermal fuse or control board damage, sometimes after a power surge.

Cape Town's soft water

Most of Cape Town's municipal water is soft, which means scale builds up more slowly than in hard-water areas. That is good news, but it does not mean you can skip descaling: scale still forms over time, and coffee oils and milk residue cause just as many problems. On smallholdings and farms using borehole water, in parts of the Winelands and further out, water can be much harder, and descaling matters more.

Office coffee machines

Office machines in Cape Town business districts make dozens of cups a day. The most common causes of breakdowns are full grounds containers and drip trays, brew units that are never rinsed, and milk systems that are never cleaned. We repair and service office machines on site, help set up a simple daily and weekly cleaning routine and can schedule regular servicing.

Holiday homes

Coffee machines in Hermanus, South Peninsula and West Coast holiday homes often stand for weeks with water in the tank and milk in the frother. Clean and dry the milk system, empty the tank and beans, and switch off at the wall before leaving.
