Prevention

• Replace the water filter at the interval the manufacturer recommends, usually every six months.
• If you switch the fridge off while away, also turn off the water supply to it and empty the ice bin.
• When you return, discard the first few batches of ice and run some water through the dispenser to flush the line.

Built-in and integrated fridges

Built-in fridges sit inside cabinetry, which limits airflow. They rely on carefully designed ventilation paths, often through a grille at the bottom or a gap at the top. If those vents are blocked by a kickplate, a mat, dust or added cabinetry, the fridge cannot release heat. It runs longer, gets warmer and the compressor wears out.

Damp, salt and idle periods

Leaving your fridge for the off-season

You have two choices:

Leave it on: Use a delayed-restart surge protector, keep it partly stocked with drinks or water bottles to stabilise the temperature, and ask a caretaker to check it after power cuts.

Switch it off: Empty it, clean it, turn off the water supply to the ice maker, dry it and prop the doors open so mould cannot grow. Switch it on a day before you need it.
