Summer in J-Bay is hard on fridges

In December and January, Jeffreys Bay's fridges and freezers work their hardest. The house is full, doors open and close all day, cold drinks and bait share space with holiday food, and the kitchen is warmer than usual. Many homes also have a second fridge or chest freezer in the garage or braai area, often in a hot, salty space with little airflow.

That combination is when weak components give up. A fan that was getting noisy, a thermostat that was slightly off or a slow gas leak suddenly becomes a warm fridge full of food.

Salt air and the condenser

Every fridge has a condenser that releases the heat taken out of the fridge into the room. On most fridges it is a black grid at the back or a coil underneath, often with a small fan. Close to the sea, salt-laden air settles on the condenser along with dust and fluff. Over time:

• Dust and salt insulate the coil so it cannot release heat properly
• Salt corrodes the coil and the fan motor
• The fridge runs longer and hotter to compensate
• The compressor wears out sooner

Fridges in Wavecrest, Paradise Beach and Aston Bay homes near the beach, and especially those in garages, outdoor kitchens and covered braai areas, suffer most.

What to do

• Pull the fridge out once or twice a year and vacuum the condenser with a brush attachment.
• Keep a gap of a few centimetres around the fridge for air to circulate.
• Do not keep fridges in direct sun or in enclosed, unventilated spaces.
• Fridges designed for indoor use may struggle in very hot garages. Check the climate rating on your model.

Not cooling

Failed condenser or evaporator fans, a faulty thermostat, a starter relay, a defrost failure or a gas leak.

Fridge warm, freezer fine

Usually a defrost system failure in a frost-free model, where ice blocks the air passage to the fridge section.

Chest freezer not freezing

Common in garages over summer. Causes include a failing compressor, low gas, a worn lid seal or simply too much heat around the freezer.

Leaking water

Blocked defrost drains, or leaks from ice maker and dispenser water lines.

Noisy fridges

Fan motors corroded by salt, or ice touching fan blades.

Not starting after a power cut

Surge damage to the relay, overload or board.

Holiday rentals and guesthouses

For rental owners and guesthouses, a fridge failure means unhappy guests and possibly a refund. To reduce the risk:

• Have the fridge checked before the season, at the same time as your aircon service.
• Clean the condenser coil before December.
• Check door seals: close the door on a sheet of paper; if it slides out easily, the seal needs attention.
• Use a delayed-restart surge protector.
• Ask your cleaner to report any unusual noises, warm spots or water.

Fishing and bait freezers

Many J-Bay households keep a separate freezer for bait and fish. These are often older chest freezers kept outside or in garages, and they work hard in summer. Keep the lid seal clean, defrost them when ice builds up thicker than about a centimetre, and keep them in the shade with space around them.

What to do while you wait

• Keep doors closed as much as possible.
• Move perishable food to a cooler box with ice.
• If the fridge is clicking but not running, switch it off.
• Note any error codes, noises or smells.
