Hard water and dishwashers

Many homes and farms in and around Humansdorp use borehole water, which is often hard. Hard water contains dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. In a dishwasher, those minerals cause two kinds of problems.

Scale inside the machine

When hard water is heated, minerals deposit as scale on the heating element, the temperature sensor, the spray arms and the inside of the tub. A scaled element takes longer to heat, works harder and eventually burns out. Scale also clogs spray arm holes, so dishes are not cleaned properly.

Residue on dishes

Hard water leaves white spots and a cloudy film on glasses and dark dishes. Detergent works less effectively, so you may be tempted to add more, which leaves even more residue.

The built-in water softener

Most dishwashers have a built-in water softener that removes hardness minerals before the water is used. It needs two things to work:

1. Dishwasher salt in the salt compartment, usually a screw cap in the bottom of the tub. The salt regenerates the softener. Without it, the softener stops working. 2. The right hardness setting. Most machines let you set the water hardness level through the control panel. If it is set too low for your borehole water, the softener does not do enough.

Many Humansdorp households never use salt or never adjust the setting, and their machines suffer for it. Use dishwasher salt (not table salt), keep the compartment topped up and set the hardness level to match your water. A simple water hardness test strip tells you where you stand.

Sediment from boreholes and tanks

Borehole and tank water can carry fine sand and silt. A small mesh filter where the inlet hose connects to the dishwasher catches it. When it blocks, the machine fills slowly or stops with a water supply error. Cleaning this filter is a common fix. If your supply carries a lot of sediment, a sediment filter on the line protects all your appliances.
